Jack BRABHAM Biography
Australian racing driver Sir John Arthur Brabham AO OBE, popularly known as Jack Brabham, enjoyed remarkable success in Formula One. Brabham, who was born on April 2nd, 1926 in Hurstville, New South Wales, fell in love with cars at a young age. He left school at the age of 15 to work at a nearby garage and pursue a career in mechanics. He attended a technical college to study metallurgy, carpentry, and technical drawing.
Brabham joined the Royal Australian Air Force as a flight mechanic at the age of 18. He developed a modest service, repair, and machining business after being released from the RAAF. Brabham’s racing career began in 1948 after he agreed to observe a midget car race on the advice of a friend. Then, using a JAP motorbike engine that had been modified, he built his own vehicle and rapidly achieved success in midget racing.
Brabham’s success in midget racing inspired him to investigate road racing, and he soon began participating in Australia and New Zealand with modified Cooper racing automobiles. Brabham relocated to the UK in 1955 and worked as a driver and technical assistant for the Cooper Car Company’s racing squad. In the design and development of the mid-engined cars that Cooper debuted to Formula One and the Indianapolis 500, he was a vital contributor.
Brabham became the first Australian to win the Formula One World Championship by winning it in 1959 and 1960. Together with Ron Tauranac, he founded his own racing team, Brabham, in 1962. During the 1960s, Brabham’s squad rose to become the world’s largest producer of customer racing cars.
The Formula One World Championship was won by Brabham in one of his own cars in 1966, making it the first and only time anyone has ever done so. After the 1970 season, he gave from racing in Formula One and moved back to Australia, where he continued to run his businesses and bought a farm.
Brabham continued to be active in motorsport even after retiring, going to and taking part in several races all over the world. At the age of 88, he passed away on May 19, 2014, leaving behind a tremendous legacy in the sport. Geoff, Gary, and David, Brabham’s three surviving sons, all pursued careers in motorsport.
Both as a driver and a team owner, Sir Jack Brabham made significant contributions to Formula One that will never be forgotten. For many decades to come, his achievements to the sport and his influence on Australian motorsport will be honored.
