Seven-time F1 Grand Prix winner Juan Pablo Montoya recently shared his thoughts on Fernando Alonso’s driving style.
Despite being 41 years old, Montoya claims that Alonso’s style hasn’t changed much over the years. Last season, Alonso made headlines when he announced his move from Alpine to Aston Martin, and the decision seems to be paying off after five rounds in the 2023 season.
The Spanish driver has been one of the standout performers this season, with four podium finishes in the first five races, as well as a P4 finish on the streets of Azerbaijan.
Montoya, who raced alongside Alonso in F1 between 2001 and 2006, has now weighed in on the Spaniard’s incredible performances this season.
Alonso ‘Still Driving the Same’
Speaking to DAZN, Montoya said, “Well, I think it’s funny how everyone is talking about it. But to be honest, I think he’s still driving the same as before.
He hasn’t changed much, it’s just that he’s in a better car now and obviously he’s using it well.” Montoya also praised Alonso for his ability to unite the Aston Martin team since his arrival, stating, “What I do have to say is that he’s doing a really good job of getting everyone behind him. That’s really cool to see.”
Currently, Alonso sits in P3 in the driver standings, with Aston Martin leading Mercedes and Ferrari in the constructor standings.
This impressive performance is not only due to his consistent driving style but also the better car he has this season.
The Impact of a Better Car
One factor that has contributed to Alonso’s success this season is the improved car he’s driving.
According to Montoya, the key difference between Alonso’s previous performances and his current ones is the better car he now has at his disposal. In an interview with Motorsport, Montoya explained that Alonso’s driving style hasn’t changed; instead, he finally has a competitive car to drive.
“It’s funny how everyone is talking about it. But to be honest, I think he’s still driving the same as before. He hasn’t changed much, it’s just that he has a better car now and obviously he’s using it well. What I do have to say is that he’s doing a really good job of getting everyone behind him. That’s really great to see.,” Montoya said.
