Nyck de Vries was thrown into the deep end at the Italian Grand Prix last year when he was called up at the last minute to make his Formula 1 debut. Little did he know, he was in for a pleasant surprise when he lined up on the grid next to his compatriot and two-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen.
De Vries, who was a Mercedes’ reserve driver at the time, was able to qualify 13th on the grid and was promoted to eighth after other drivers took grid penalties. The Dutch driver was able to stay in the top 10 for the race and ended up scoring points on his F1 debut.
The young driver was able to talk to Verstappen on the night before the race and again on the morning of the race. When the two lined up on the grid, Verstappen came to him as an older brother for some words of encouragement. De Vries also receive support from two-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
