Early Life and Career

Valtteri Viktor Bottas was born on 28 August 1989 in Nastola, Finland. From a young age, Bottas was enthralled by racing. His interest in motorsport was sparked at the age of 6 when he attended a local karting event that he had seen advertised at his local supermarket while shopping with his grandfather. Seeing the karts racing around the track ignited a passion for speed inside the young Bottas. His racing hero while growing up was fellow Finnish driver Mika Häkkinen, who was Formula One World Champion in 1998 and 1999.

With the full support of his family, Bottas began karting competitively in the mid-1990s. He showed prodigious talent and raced karts throughout Europe. In 2005 at age 15, Bottas finished 8th in the Karting World Cup competing for the P.D.B. Racing Team. This established Bottas as one of the top young karting talents in Europe.

In 2008, Bottas graduated to single-seater racing cars, competing in both the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Northern European Cup series. He dominated both championships, winning the Eurocup title by over 60 points and the NEC championship by an even bigger margin of 102 points. This marked Bottas out as a future star in the making.

Having conquered the junior formulae, Bottas moved up to the competitive Formula 3 Euroseries in 2009 with reigning champions ART Grand Prix. Despite not winning a race all season, Bottas remarkable consistency earned him 3rd place in the championship, including two pole positions. Bottas announced himself on the big stage by winning the prestigious Masters of Formula 3 event at Zolder, leading from pole position and setting the fastest lap. He proved this was no fluke by winning the Masters event again in 2010, becoming the first driver to win back-to-back titles.

Key Career Highlights Before F1

  • 2005 – 8th in Karting World Cup
  • 2008 – Wins in Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault NEC
  • 2009 – 3rd in Formula 3 Euroseries, wins Masters of F3
  • 2010 – Test driver for Williams F1, wins Masters of F3 again
  • 2011 – Wins GP3 Series championship

In 2010, Bottas status as one of Europe’s most promising talents was confirmed when he was signed as an official test driver for the Williams Formula One team. He would retain this role for the next 3 seasons, participating in over a dozen Friday practice sessions to gain invaluable experience driving contemporary F1 cars.

Alongside his duties for Williams, Bottas also competed in the GP3 Series in 2011, again for reigning champions ART Grand Prix. He suffered a difficult start to the season, but hit his stride in the second half of the year, winning the final four races to clinch the championship in dramatic fashion at the last round.

Formula One Career

Williams (2013-2016)

Bottas’ impressive performances in the junior categories and behind the wheel of the Williams FW33 were enough to convince the team to promote him to a full-time race seat alongside Pastor Maldonado for the 2013 F1 season.

In his first F1 race at the Australian GP, Bottas qualified 16th and finished 14th, one place behind fellow rookie Esteban Gutierrez. In the next 4 races, Bottas qualified and finished in the lower end of the top 15 places, coming close to scoring his first points. At the Canadian GP, he qualified an excellent 3rd place in wet conditions before dropping back to 14th in the race.

Bottas had to wait until the penultimate race of the season, the United States GP, to finally score his maiden F1 points. After qualifying 8th, he drove a clean race to finish 8th and earn 4 points. This was the only points scoring finish of his debut season.

Nevertheless, Bottas out-performed and out-scored teammate Maldonado over the course of the season. His consistency and technical feedback were valuable assets in helping Williams develop and improve the car. Bottas unsurprisingly retained his race seat for 2014.

In his sophomore season, Bottas showed the paddock his full potential in an improved Williams package. At the opening race in Australia, he qualified 10th and finished 6th after recovering from an early crash. The first podium of his F1 career came at the Austrian GP, where he qualified 2nd and finished 3rd behind the Mercedes cars.

This sparked a run of 5 more podiums over the next 7 races, including 4 second place finishes in Britain, Germany, Russia and Abu Dhabi. Bottas was the model of consistency, scoring points in every race he finished in 2014. His efforts were rewarded with 4th place in the championship, ahead of multiple world champions Vettel and Alonso.

Bottas maintained his excellent form into 2015, finishing 5 of the first 6 races in the top 5 places. However, Williams fell behind Ferrari in the development war and he could only manage two more podiums in Canada and Mexico. Disappointing reliability also cost Bottas strong results on several occasions. He finished 5th in the championship for the second consecutive season.

The 2016 season proved more difficult as Ferrari and Red Bull moved further ahead in the pecking order. Bottas scored just one podium with 3rd place in Canada. He again outscored veteran teammate Massa over the course of the season, proving his consistency and race pace.

Key Achievements with Williams

  • 17 points finishes from 59 starts
  • 9 podium finishes
  • 1 pole position
  • Best championship position – 4th (2014)

After four seasons and over 100 Grand Prix starts with Williams, Bottas had firmly established himself as one of the fastest and most consistent drivers in Formula One. He had fulfilled the potential spotted in his junior career and was ready for a new challenge.

Mercedes (2017-2021)

Following the shock retirement of newly crowned world champion Nico Rosberg after the 2016 season, Mercedes began searching for a suitable replacement teammate for Lewis Hamilton. Impressed by his combination of speed, consistency and technical acumen, Mercedes signed Bottas on a one year deal to partner Hamilton for 2017.

Bottas settled in quickly at Mercedes and scored his first podium on debut with 3rd place in Australia. At the Bahrain GP just two races later, he took the first pole position of his F1 career. His maiden Grand Prix win came at round four in Russia, holding off the Ferraris in a tense finish to fulfil his potential.

In his first season with Mercedes, Bottas won 3 races and took 4 pole positions on his way to finishing a career best 3rd in the championship. He displayed impressive speed but crucially provided solid support in Mercedes’ successful constructors title defense against Ferrari.

Bottas was retained by Mercedes for 2018 but endured a difficult campaign. Mechanical issues cost him strong results in qualifying in Australia, China and Germany. He suffered more ill-fortune in races, losing likely wins in Azerbaijan and Russia. Meanwhile, teammate Hamilton was in the form of his life, winning 11 races to wrap up the title with ease. Bottas finished a distant 5th in the standings with no wins.

Stung by criticism of his performance relative to Hamilton, Bottas bounced back strongly in 2019. He started the season perfectly with victory from pole position in Australia. He followed this up with further wins in Azerbaijan, Britain and Japan, also taking 5 poles over the course of the season.

Although Bottas was a clear step closer to Hamilton, he could not match his teammate’s supreme consistency. Hamilton won 11 more races to wrap up a sixth world title. Nevertheless, Bottas achieved a career best second place in the championship through his improved speed and reliability.

Hopes were high that Bottas could sustain his challenge and take the fight to Hamilton in 2020. He started strongly again, winning the opening race in Austria from pole position. But as the shortened COVID-affected season developed, Hamilton once again had the edge in the title fight.

With his Mercedes contract expiring at the end of 2020, Bottas was under pressure to deliver. Despite taking two wins in Russia and the USA, he was comfortably outscored by Hamilton who clinched the title with three races to spare. Bottas was retained by Mercedes for 2021 but it was clear his time with the team was nearing an end.

Key Achievements with Mercedes

  • 9 race wins
  • 17 pole positions
  • 58 podium finishes
  • Twice finished 2nd in the championship (2019, 2020)

Although he was unable to match Hamilton’s incredible success at Mercedes, Bottas played a crucial role in the team winning five consecutive constructors world championships from 2017 to 2021. He scored wins, poles and podiums consistently and provided excellent support to Hamilton in the title battles against Vettel and Ferrari.

Alfa Romeo (2022-Present)

With promising Mercedes junior George Russell eager for a promotion, Bottas accepted an offer to join Alfa Romeo in 2022 after five seasons with the Silver Arrows. He replaced retiring 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen at the Swiss-based squad.

Bottas brought a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to Alfa Romeo. Despite no longer having a title-winning car, Bottas has impressed in the early races of 2022. He scored points on his team debut in Bahrain and produced an excellent drive from 13th to 5th at the Emilia Romagna GP.

Driving for a midfield team is a new challenge for Bottas after years at the front of the grid. Alongside rookie teammate Zhou Guanyu, he is using all his experience to help rebuild Alfa Romeo into regular points contenders once again.

With over 150 Grand Prix starts under his belt, Bottas still has plenty to offer in Formula One. The next phase of his career will show if he can lead and inspire Alfa Romeo to climb back up the competitive order.

Rallying and Other Racing

Outside of Formula One, Bottas has pursued his passion for racing in other disciplines such as rallying. In January 2019, he entered the Arctic Lapland Rally, one of the rounds of the Finnish Rally Championship. Up against seasoned professionals, Bottas impressively finished 5th overall and won the fifth stage against the clock.

In late 2019, Bottas won the prestigious Rallycircuit Côte d’Azur event at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France. Driving a Citroën DS3 WRC car, he beat a field containing stars such as multiple WRC champion Sebastien Loeb.

Bottas has also tried his hand at competitive ice racing and crosskart events in his native Finland. He relishes the challenge of driving flat out on slippery snow and ice, honing the car control skills that helped him reach F1.

In January 2021, Bottas entered the Arctic Lapland Rally for the third time. He finished 6th overall against more experienced local drivers at the wheel of his Citroën DS3 WRC. Bottas has proven to be extremely versatile behind the wheel of any racing car.

Personal Life

Away from racing, Bottas lived for several years in Monaco, taking advantage of the area’s beautiful climate and low taxes. However, he still returns regularly to his beloved Finland where he owns a lake house.

Between 2016 and 2019, Bottas was married to Emilia Pikkarainen, a fellow Finnish athlete he had dated since 2010. She is a professional swimmer who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Since 2020, Bottas has been in a relationship with Australian professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell. They share a passion for training, fitness and competition across various sports.

Bottas is famously very private and protective of his personal life. Nevertheless, he is reported to be charming and funny in private with a very calm, understated personality.

Other Ventures and Philanthropy

Away from racing, Bottas has several business and philanthropic interests that reflect his varied passions and interests.

Along with two childhood friends, Bottas co-owns a coffee roastery called Kahiwa Coffee Roasters based in Lahti, Finland. The company specializes in sourcing and roasting high quality organic coffee beans from ethical growers around the world.

In 2017, Bottas established the Valtteri Bottas Duathlon, an annual charity sporting event held in Finland. Competitors complete a run followed by a cycle ride with all fees going towards local social projects and good causes selected by Bottas.

Bottas is also co-founder of FNLD GRVL, an ultra-distance gravel cycling event in his hometown of Lahti. The grueling race takes place on forest roads and trails surrounding a lake. Bottas is hands on in supporting and promoting the event.

Reflecting his varied interests, Bottas purchased a 10% stake in Finnish ice hockey team Pelicans in early 2021. He is keen to support sport in the country any way he can.

Despite his fame and success, Bottas has remained remarkably humble and eager to give back through his philanthropic endeavors and business interests.
