Chaz Mostert Masters the Gold Coast Rain. Walkinshaw Toyota Strikes First in the Finals. A Spare Supra Delivers a Statement.

Chaz Mostert controlled a rain-soaked Gold Coast opener, turning treacherous conditions into a commanding race victory for Walkinshaw Toyota. The 85-lap Supercars contest began behind the Safety Car, with pole-sitter Broc Feeney leading the field through three cautious laps on the slippery Surfers Paradise street circuit. Once racing resumed, Mostert swept past and built a lead of more than 23 seconds over David Reynolds, who finished second. The result sends the defending champion into the next stage of the Finals and gives his team its first Finals win on the Gold Coast. Even more striking, Mostert delivered it in the team’s spare car, a chassis that wore Ford Mustang bodywork only a year ago.

The victory extends Mostert’s run at the circuit after his two wins there in 2025. It also underlined how quickly conditions can rewrite the order in Australian racing: Matt Payne started fifth and ran second late on, but a five-second penalty dropped him behind Reynolds. Gold Coast Supercars: Mostert Seizes Control After the Restart

Feeney held the lead through the opening Safety Car period, but grip became harder to find once the field went green. Mostert made his move on the first lap at racing speed, then pulled clear at more than a second per lap while Feeney slipped back through the pack. Triple Eight brought Feeney in on lap 21 for wet tyres with adjusted pressures, but the early loss had already reshaped the contest.

Mostert’s first stop came slightly ahead of schedule as he caught traffic that had pitted earlier. He returned to the circuit and kept extending his advantage, reaching a reported 27 seconds before his crew asked him to save fuel with two laps left. “Everything was faultless,” he said, adding that the opening conditions felt “pretty sketchy”. Reynolds built his runner-up finish from 14th with a bold lap-nine stop that gave him clear track. After his second stop, he held the race leader behind him for almost ten laps, then secured second, 23.461 seconds adrift. Payne crossed the line in front of him on the road, but the penalty left the points leader third, just 0.862 seconds behind Reynolds in the final classification.

Anton De Pasquale took fourth, ahead of Andre Heimgartner, while Feeney recovered to ninth. The race also exposed the risk facing the Finals contenders: Jack Le Brocq finished 22nd, Thomas Randle 23rd and Kai Allen last after an alternator-related stop. Sunday’s second race now carries added pressure for those damaged by the opener. See how the strategy unfolded in
