Nico Jamin secured the pole position for the no65 Panis Racing Oreca-Gibson by clocking 1m34.802 in the last lap of the qualifying session. This is his first European Le Mans Series (ELMS) pole in four years. The reigning LMP2 champion Yifei Ye from the no37 Cool Racing Oreca missed out on the top spot by just 0.097 seconds.
Paul Loup Chatin from the no28 IDEC Sport Oreca was the first to go under 1m35 with a 1m34.976 lap, pushing Ye to the second spot. However, Chatin was unable to improve his time and went into the pits with just one minute left on the clock. Meanwhile, the other cars on fresh Goodyears started to post faster times. Jack Aitken from the no34 Racing Team Turkey Oreca finished third fastest and became the top LMP2 Pro/Am car.
The no65 Panis Racing Oreca’s last lap snatched away the provisional pole from Ye, who had clocked 1m34.899, making Jamin the pole-position holder for tomorrow’s 4 Hours of Barcelona. Aitken improved his time again to finish the session third fastest in the no34 Racing Team Turkey Oreca, 0.029s ahead of the no28 IDEC Sport Oreca.
Malthe Jakobsen tops LMP3
Malthe Jakobsen from the no17 Cool Racing Ligier secured his fourth pole position of the season with a 1m40.112 lap of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The young Dane initially set a 1m39 lap, but lost it to track limits when he ran slightly wide on the exit of the chicane. Nicolas Pino from the no13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier claimed the second spot on the LMP3 grid with a 1m40.778 lap, 0.666 seconds behind Jakobsen. Bailey Voisin from the no2 United Autosports Ligier posted the third fastest lap with a 1m41.005 in the last minute of the session, 0.222s ahead of the no27 Cool Racing Ligier of Antoine Doquin.
Ahmad Al Harthy takes pole position in LMGTE
The no69 Oman Racing with TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage will start at the head of the 11-car LMGTE field after Ahmad Al Harthy took his second pole position of the 2022 season. Al Harthy posted his best lap of 1m45.692 towards the end of qualifying and headed the timing screen for the entire 10-minute session. Sarah Bovy from the no83 Iron Lynx Ferrari 488 GTE finished second with a 1m46.038 lap. The championship-leading no77 Proton Competition Porsche will start in third place, alongside the no32 Rinaldi Racing Ferrari.
